At one point, SilencerCo sold a .50 muzzle charger equipped with a fixed muffler. Only, it was not a silencer. It was legal because the muffler could not be removed and mounted on other weapons, and it was attached to a muzzle-loading rifle, which technically was not a weapon. The easiest way is simply to get a shotgun with an 18-inch barrel and a pistol grip like a Mossberg cruiser. For many people, a conventional pistol-grip shotgun will scratch that itch for a shorter, more compact pistol. But for some, the itching remains. When you add a front grip to a pistol, the ATF no longer classifies it as a pistol. It becomes an AOW regulated by the NFA. Since it costs the same amount ($200) to make and register a short-barreled rifle (SBR), it`s wiser to register your pistol as an SBR. [6] The legality of vertical front grips of pistols in the United States is unclear. In the United States, firearms are classified under the National Firearms Act and firearms manufactured with certain characteristics are subject to restrictions and controls. In the case of a forward vertical grip on a pistol, the law does not explicitly define such a characteristic as belonging to any category. [ref. needed] You can register for an AOW by filling out the ATF 1 form. The front handle can only be legally added after the application has been approved. If you are considering adding a vertical front grip to a handgun, you should first consult GRL Law. Detachable muzzle devices (such as flash suppressors, muzzle brakes, barrel extensions, etc.) do not count as measurements of total length or barrel length, so they are removed before measurement. The front handles help with the maneuverability of the firearm because the natural angle of a person`s outstretched hand is designed to grasp objects at a vertical angle rather than horizontal, perpendicular to the body. [1] Front grips may reduce the accuracy of precision rifle firing if the shooter tends to “muscle the weapon”. [2] The AR-15 pistol legally mocks all of these ideas.
Take an AR-model receiver that was never built like a rifle. Place a rod with any barrel length less than 16 inches you want there. Add a tilted front handle that has a 45-degree angle instead of a 90-degree angle. Add a gun stabilization mount. The end result looks like a gun, feels like a gun, and can even be legally carried like a rifle. But it`s not a gun. Because it`s a handgun. Still confused? It is illegal to manufacture or possess unregistered AOWs. If you want to add a vertical front grip to your gun, submit an ATF Form 1 application to register it as an AOW or, better yet, SBR. But how, you may ask? Because the NFA has very specific parts in its lists and decisions. For example, a short-barreled shotgun must have a stock and barrel less than 18 inches in length. If there`s no stock, then it`s just a gun — and a gun only needs to have a total length of at least 26 inches, regardless of the length of the barrel.
So we get fun shotguns that aren`t shotguns, like those from Mossberg, Remington, Black Aces Tactical and others. If you don`t necessarily need a shotgun under 26 inches in length, if you want to hide it legally, or if you have a back stick, then why pay the tax stamp? Drop the shotgun; Get a gun. That`s the American thing. A shorter version is called a “stub grip” and is primarily intended to prevent the shooter`s hand from moving in front of the muzzle. [2] A few years ago, a smart person read the NFA with a tape measure and started laughing. They wrote to the ATF for clarification, laughed angrily at the response, screwed a few things together, and started enjoying a 14-inch pistol-gripped shotgun that was completely legal without jumping through the ATF`s tires.
